From Hobgood into History................

With an illustrious military career spanning nearly four decades, General Henry Hugh Shelton is very possibly one of the most famous people to come from the Hobgood area.

Growing up on a small farm situated halfway between the communities of Hobgood and Speed North Carolina, General Shelton attended N.C. State University and Auburn University obtaining both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees.

Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1963, Shelton attended  Ranger training and went to Vietnam a first lieutenant in 1966. Serving two tours of duty during which he earned a Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart, Shelton is the very definition of a professional soldier.

Following his return to the States, General Shelton served in a variety of command and staff positions, including commanding the 3d Battalion, 60th infantry in the 9th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, commanding the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and serving as the Chief of Staff of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York.

In 1987 after being selected for brigadier general, General Shelton served in the Operations Directorate of the Joint Staff. A two year assignment followed as Assistant Division Commander for Operations of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), a seven month deployment to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield And Desert Storm.

Back in North Carolina after the Gulf War, General Shelton was promoted to major general and assumed command of the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1993 he was promoted to lieutenant general and took command of the XVIIIth Airborne Corps. 1994 saw General Shelton in Haiti commanding the Joint Task Force which conducted Operation Uphold Democracy. In March 1996, Shelton was promoted to general and became Commander in Chief of The U.S. Special Operations Command.

The crowning achievement came on October 1,1997 when General Henry Hugh Shelton became the fourteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military post for an officer of the United States Military.

General Shelton is married to the former Carolyn L Johnson and they have three sons Jon, Jeff, and Mark.
