(Sewer Project Picture Gallery) Hobgood Sewer System is Complete! Several years ago, the citizens of Hobgood concluded that their population growth and business development was limited due to the lack of a central waste water collection system and suitable treatment facility. Health and environmental risks associated with private septic systems had rendered all vacant residential building lots useless. Hobgood Academy and the central business district could not expand due to unsuitable soils. These restraints are now a thing of the past. Thanks to funding through the Unsewered Communities Program administered by the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, in August of 2002 the town was approved for a 3 million dollar sewer construction grant from the Clean Water Bond Fund; an additional half million dollars in CDBG Funds was granted by the NC Dept. of Commerce through the Upper Coastal Plains Council of Government. These funds, along with local funds enabled construction of a central collection system and sewer forced main to get underway on May 12. 2004. The slated completion date is June 1, 2005 and we are pleased to announce that construction is complete. The collection system consist of 5 miles of gravity mains, 115 manholes and 3 pump stations complete with generators and remote access programmability and monitoring. The system serves approximately 185 existing water users within the town limits and has the capability of being expanded outside the town limits. Additionally, the Town's Engineer, Cavanaugh & Associates, P.A, designed the system to support a 20 year projected growth potential. In order to keep the cost to users at a minimum and to provide for capital improvements over the years, the Town entered into an agreement with the adjacent Town of Scotland Neck to purchase capacity at their Waste Water Treatment Facility rather than building their own plant. To this end, the new system will include approximately 7 miles of Sewer Forced Main (100% of which has already been installed) along Highway 125 to the Scotland Neck town limits. |
